Portfolio update – May 2015

At the end of May 2015, my portfolio stood at $97,412.10 across all my accounts combined. Comparing to my portfolio balance of $94,021.37 at the end of April 2015, this represents an increase of $3,390.73 for the month of April which represents a 3.60% increase for the month.

Of the increase, new investments accounted for $3,757.00, thereby giving a net portfolio decrease of $366.27 or 0.38% for the month.

I continued my weekly sharebuilder purchases in April. In addition to that, I initiated a position in Exxon Mobil (XOM). Total investments of over $3,700 follows a slow month of investing in April with $1,200. I would like to continue investing around $2,500 a month in order to reach my goal of investing $35,000 this year.

Here is a graph showing the growth of my portfolio since 2009. As always, it is satisfying to see the graphs going higher each month/year. It reinforces the fact that I am making progress towards my goals.

Recent Purchase – Exxon Mobil (XOM)

Apart from my weekly sharebuilder purchases, I try to make 1 or 2 big purchases a month in order to meet my goal of investing $35,000 this year. The last big purchase was towards the end of April when I added to my NOV position.

After almost a month, I had another big purchase. I don’t want to say much about Exxon Mobil. The company is one of biggest oil companies in the world and has been a consistent performer. The oil sector continues to be weak and most predictions state that the oil price will be weak for the next couple of years. We will have to wait and see. The big companies have already braced for this by cutting capex in order to save the cash flow. But the oil price will definitely have an impact on the EPS like witnessed in the recently quarterly results from the oil companies.

Exxon’s recently quarterly EPS was $1.17 compared to $2.10 in same quarter in 2014. Revenue too has dropped by a third compared to the same quarter of 2014. But with the Capex cuts, the EPS should improve a bit in the next couple of quarters even with lower revenues.

Goals update – April 2015

I like to review the progress at least once a month to determine where I am with respect to meeting/achieving my goals.

These are the goals for 2015:

  • Invest at least $35,000
    • New investments in April amounted to $1,964.50. With huge investments of over $5,000 in March, April was slower than I would have liked.
    • Total investments in 2015 so far equals $9,494.95 which amounts to about 27.12% of my goal. I am still behind in this goal. With 1/3rd of the year gone by, I have only achieved 27.12% of my goal. Need to invest aggressively in the next couple of months to catch up.
  • Receive at least $2,500 in dividends
    • I received $254.65 in dividends in April. So far I have received $851.92 in dividends this year. This represents 34.07% of my annual goal.
    • I will be able to achieve this goal based on this pace. Will review the goal in a month or so and revise as needed.
  • Achieve at least $3,200 in projected annual dividends
    • My projected annual dividends stand at $2,688.49 at the end of April. That’s an increase of over $119 in April. New investments and dividend increases helped this increase. I will need increase the investments to keep pace to achieve this goal.
  • DO NOT have a portfolio of more than 45 stocks/ETFs
    • Currently hold 40 stocks/ETFs. I did not initiate any new positions in April.

Portfolio update – April 2015

At the end of April 2015, my portfolio stood at $94,021.37 across all my accounts combined. Comparing to my portfolio balance of $90,105.87 at the end of March 2015, this represents an increase of $3,915.50 for the month of April which represents a 4.34% increase for the month.

Of the increase, new investments accounted for $1,964.50, thereby giving a net portfolio increase of $1,951.00 or 2.16% for the month. This follows a decrease of almost 3.65% in March.

I continued my weekly sharebuilder purchases in April. In addition to that, I added to my National-Oilwell Varco, Inc (NOV) position. I had started a position in NOV in March and added a bit again after the stock dropped after results in April. After a great month for new investments in March (over $5,000), I did not invest as much in April.

Recent Purchase – National-Oilwell Varco, Inc (NOV)

It has been just over a month when I initiated a position in NOV on 3/24/2015. I had purchased 30 shares at $49.00 a month ago. Since then I have been looking to add more to the energy sector and was looking at stocks like XOM and CVX.

Apparently, the stock increased by over 10% since my purchase last month. I didn’t want to pursue it at that price and was looking at XOM and/or CVX for my next energy purchase. But early this week, NOV announced their quarterly numbers and even though the company exceeded the expectations, the stock took a beating due to lower outlook as well as lower backlog of orders.The stock dropped back to the $50 range on Tuesday after the results and I used up the opportunity to add more to the stock at reasonable levels.

Goals update – March 2015

I like to review the progress at least once a month to determine where I am with respect to meeting/achieving my goals.

These are the goals for 2015:

  • Invest at least $35,000
    • New investments in March amounted to $5,130.45. After a slow start to the year in January and February, I made up some lost ground in March through these purchases.
    • Total investments in 2015 so far equals $7,530.45 which amounts to about 21.51% of my goal. While March helped me catch up, I am still behind on the goal. With 25% of the year gone by, I have only achieved 21.51% of my goal. Hoping to be caught up by April.
  • Receive at least $2,500 in dividends
    • I received $261.00 in dividends in March. So far I have received $597.27 in dividends this year. This represents 23.89% of my annual goal.
    • Additional investments through the rest of the year and dividend increases will help me achieve this goal.
  • Achieve at least $3,200 in projected annual dividends
    • My projected annual dividends stand at $$2,569.29 at the end of March. That’s an increase of over $225 in a single month. This is definitely a nice improvement due to the new investments. Need to keep pace at the new investments to achieve this goal.
  • DO NOT have a portfolio of more than 45 stocks/ETFs
    • Currently hold 40 stocks/ETFs. I initiated one new position in National-Oilwell Varco, Inc (NOV) in March.

Recent Purchase – National-Oilwell Varco, Inc (NOV)

It has been over 3 months since I made any big energy related purchase. The last ones were in November and December when I purchased ConocoPhillips. Since then the energy sector has been range bound and continues to be weak and hasn’t come out of the woods yet. These COP purchases are still in negative territory. But the energy sector still provides one of the most attractive valuations in these market conditions. So I ended up coming back to energy sector with this purchase.
